Week Without Walls

discovery bay international School

Make and Do HK had the pleasure of hosting Discovery Bay International School for their "Week Without Walls," an engaging activity week where students venture into the community, learn new skills, and collaborate with artists and designers in authentic industry environments. Our carefully curated workshops were designed to cater to students aged between 12 and 16 years old, and took place at various locations including Discovery Bay, the vibrant Sham Shui Po neighborhood, and our studio in Chai Wan.

The workshop kicked off with an exciting introductory session, setting the stage for the week ahead. Students immersed themselves in research and sketching, exploring designs for their jewellery pieces. They also delved into the world of screen printing, investigating suitable images for their creations. After transferring their designs onto silk screens and allowing them to dry, we meticulously prepared the screens by filling in the background, ensuring they were ready for the upcoming screen printing process. To make the most of their spare time, each student received a laser-cut notebook to engage in cross-stitching.

SHAM SHUI PO VISIT

The following day, students embarked on a captivating field trip to Sham Shui Po. They had the opportunity to conduct research and personally select materials for their jewellery, immersing themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the area. Through street photography and visits to market stalls, haberdasheries, and fabric stores, they absorbed the essence and inspiration of the neighbourhood.

On the third day, students focused their efforts on bringing their unique jewellery pieces to life at our Chai Wan studio. We skillfully transformed their line drawings into computer vectors and prepared the design files for laser cutting. With a wide array of acrylic and wood textures and colors at their disposal, students carefully selected materials that perfectly complemented their designs. Witnessing their creations take shape as the laser cutting machine worked its magic was an exhilarating experience for all. Students added the finishing touches using jewellery components they had acquired during their visit to Sham Shui Po, resulting in stunning and personalised pieces.

Thursday marked the commencement of the screen printing process. Students honed their techniques and fine-tuned their color choices through practice on paper until they were satisfied with their craftsmanship. Finally, they skillfully applied their designs onto tote bags, proudly showcasing their artwork and creativity.

As the week drew to a close, Friday was dedicated to the development of marketing plans and campaigns. Students unleashed their entrepreneurial spirit as they brainstormed innovative strategies for effectively promoting and selling their products in the real world.

The workshop was an exceptional and transformative experience, providing students with a comprehensive and hands-on learning journey in jewellery making, screen printing, design, and marketing. Witnessing their growth, enthusiasm, and creative expression throughout the week was immensely rewarding for all involved.
