HONG KONG Skyline - Rope mural
In June 2024, I had the pleasure of working with 120 Year 6 students at Clearwater Bay School on a large-scale, collaborative rope mural project. It was an intensive week-long endeavor, filled with both challenges and immense creativity.
The students were first given a design brief to come up with building designs inspired by the Hong Kong skyline and provided with the fence dimensions so they could create their design within the parameters of the project. I also provided the students with an example of some skyline buildings taking inspiration from iconic Hong Kong structures, which they were encouraged to incorporate into their individual contributions. After selecting a vibrant color palette of poly cords, we set to work on building our imaginary skyline.
The project was initially hindered by extreme weather conditions, including red rain and thunderstorms, which made the outdoor work in the early stages quite difficult. Additionally, the timeline was quite short, in hindsight a two-week duration would have been more realistic for a project of this scale. Despite the initial challenges, the collaborative energy and creativity of the Year 6 students at Clearwater Bay School resulted in an exceptional rope mural that beautifully captures the essence of Hong Kong's vibrant skyline. I'm very pleased with the final result, and the students did a fantastic job. It was a truly rewarding experience to witness the students' enthusiasm and dedication throughout the project.
The reason we chose the skyline design for this particular project was multifaceted:
It serves as a beautiful celebration of Hong Kong, showcasing the iconic silhouette of the city's skyline.
It's an excellent collaborative art project, where each student felt they contributed their own unique mark, rather than simply following a pre-designed pattern.
The outcome is bright, cheerful, and visually impactful, both from the rooftop perspective and from the playground below.
The pixelated graphic design was straightforward enough for the students to understand and create their own section within the limited time frame, allowing each student to contribute their unique interpretation of the Hong Kong skyline.
